Wandering Through Wandlebury

After spending a few days in London I scooted my way up (or is it over?) to Cambridge to spend some time with my soul sister there. Part of her planned itinerary was a hike through Wandlebury Country Park located between Cambridge and Haverhill in the Gog Magog Hills. According to their website the park is accessible via public transportation (Stagecoach Citiplus X13 and X13a) as well as by food, bike and car. 

The park has an incredible history that dates back to the 5th century and has an Iron Age Hill Fort and a Roman road! There are over 8 miles of nature walks, an ornithology viewing post, and paddocks with Highland cows grazing. On the day we visited it wasn't particularly muddy, but it certainly can be.

Just up the road is the Gog Magog Hill Farm Shop. Oh-Em-Gee! I was a fan of this place. If I didn't have limited space in my luggage I could have easily walked away with an armful of goodies. Instead, we found a seat in the cafe and snacked on super British treats, a pot of tea, a sausage roll, and a Scotch Egg with a lovely, decadent brownie to share.

The Orchard Tea Garden

There's somewhere you need to go. I don't normally tell you, you have to visit places, really I just want to share (and record) all the wonderful (and super cool) places I've been. But seriously, you need to go here. The Orchard Tea Garden in Grantchester. A "short" 40 minute walk from Cambridge through farmers fields along the Cam, you arrive to the outskirts of Grantchester where the cafe and apple trees are located just off Mill Way. 

The menu is wholesome and hearty, the cream tea is delectable, and the setting is like no other on park chairs set among the apple trees. 

A friend took me here when I first arrived in England and I knew it was a place that I would have to one day take my parents. I was right, they loved it too.

As I said, you need to go.

Afternoon Punting in Cambridge

When I first got to Cambridge back in 2012, I was fascinated by the city and terrified of getting lost down the many, seemingly similar looking passageways around the city. After a few days of exploring, with a knowledgeable friend and independently, I discovered that it's next to impossible to get lost there. My favourite spot to explore (and to run along) was the canals. My friend and I had discussed wanting to actually get onto the water, but it would take a year and a bit, a big number birthday, and a group of 10 before we finally got the chance.

Punting is a thing in Cambridge. A big thing. Adorable young men in navy shorts, polo shirts, and dock shoes stand around town with a clip board enticing tourists and passersby to a punting tour down the Cam. It generally can be a bit pricey and not something to do often necessarily, but it was definitely a good afternoon out and with a large group it help offset the cost along with the haggling that was done. £10 a person was the final number for us.

To make the afternoon even more enjoyable, we had planned ahead; a champagne picnic on the Cam. 

These little guys were (sadly) the highlight of the tour. They swam along the boat interested in our bacon butties. We threw crumbs into the water for them and we were thoroughly entertained by them. The punters were a bit put off by the diverted attention, but these ducks were just so funny!
