Come Up To My Room is the Gladstone Hotel's alternative design exhibition; a 4 day event that takes place every January. The event encourages ''spacial exploration that engages our senses, our memories, and our perception of reality'', pushing participating artists to explore new themes and new ways of working. The exhibition is presented in the magnificent backdrop of the 126 year old hotel.
CUTMR, in its 14th year, presents the viewer with immersive installations that engages all of the senses. The artists are present and welcome a discussion regarding their work and the themes behind their inspiration.

The second floor of the historic hotel was dedicated to the exhibition, but this is Toronto's art hotel and is not short on artist displays and artistic flare. Even boasting 37 unique artist designed hotel rooms (some of which you can take a peak at!).

Talking with Mr. Li, I found out it's taken him 3 years to collect these fortune cookie fortunes and was inspired by his mother's love for and belief in the 'lucky' numbers. The ones you see here are indeed the winning numbers from OLG from the 1980s. An oscillating fan blows over the centre piece giving the impressing of rippling water. A voice softly reads fortunes, painstakingly read by a friend of Mr. Li. As you leave the room, there is a fortune for you to take away with you.

This was probably my favourite piece, found on the third floor. I loved that it filled the hallway with bright colours, a busy pattern, and the juxtaposition of the fruit and flower images with bullets and weapons. I think I liked it so much because the pattern didn't seem all that out of place in this Victorian building, but when you looked closely, almost like a magic-eye painting, the 'hidden' images reveal themselves.
