{Erin Out and About}: Pont d'Avignon

I wasn't expecting much when we purchased our tickets for the Pont St. Bénézet better known as Pont d'Avignon, but with the help of the free audio guide I very much enjoyed this 'bridge'. Apparently there is a song, Sur le Pont d'Avignon, about this bridge that is still sung in French Canada that Gina was familiar with, but I was not. There is even a dance.

The original bridge built in the 12 century, spanned the Rhone River from Avignon to Villeneuve-les-Avignon. By the 17th century there was a devastating flood that washed away much of the 22 arches, leaving only the 4 that remain today.

We each strolled along the bridge listening to the audio guides and taking in the scenery and history. I loved standing at the end of the structure listening to the waves hit against the stone and watching people moving about on the water in boats. It was here that I had a 'pinch me' moment and had to thank my lucky stars for being in that moment with some amazing friends.
